DANCING, ISLANDS, & EMBROIDERY

It is hard to believe my time here is already half way through. And it is even harder to describe everything I’m seeing and feeling, as if with new eyes…

This past week has been like returning to my childhood, spending almost the entire day playing, singing, dancing, and just acting silly with girls who have nothing but unconditional love for us. It is amazing that in only two weeks some of these kids come to love you as much as it takes someone from our own country to love in a year. It is almost impossible to ever be in a bad mood, as their love and joy is extremely contagious.

WHEN IN ETHIOPIA

It’s hard to believe than a little over a week ago I was packing up my little beach side studio in France and getting ready to go to a place that couldn’t be more different. I have been in Ziway, Ethiopia for five days now and I am sitting at the only internet cafe in town, trying to write a little something on what I have seen, smelt, heard, and felt up till now. We arrived in Addis Abeba at 5am and loaded into a truck that would take the group of volunteers the rickety three hour drive to the town we would be living in for the next month. We are staying at a mission of a group of nuns who fund and run the school we are volunteering at. From the very first day, we have been singing, laughing, playing games, and doing embroidery with over 450 girls who come every day for a type of day camp…

A TOURIST’S PARIS

There are few things not to love about the City of Lights. But if I had to narrow it down, here’s a few I would choose from my recent trip there… Such as roaming the quiet streets and watching the sun rise before the tourists appear.

LES BOUTIQUES DE BIARRITZ

Yesterday was kind of an overcast day on the coast of France so I decided to leave my little surf village for a day and head down South to the slightly more glamorous Biarritz. I’d always heard that Biarritz has some great shopping and cute boutiques that are unique and très chic! Being an intern-on-a-budget, I wasn’t really in a position to do any buying, but since window shopping is free, I thought it a perfect occasion to check out said boutiques…

BALENCIAGA IN BASQUE COUNTRY

Balenciaga-1938-adOn the 10th of June they inaugurated the museum dedicated to probably the greatest Spanish designer of all: Cristobal Balenciaga. The museum is in none other than the designer’s home town. A gorgeous, picturesque, fishing boat town, also known as Getaria, on the coast of the Basque Country. This is where I spent my Saturday.

LISBOA: SECOND GLANCES

So after a weekend of much needed rest and repose I am back to the blogging board with a little post on some of the things we did during our last days in Lisbon. If you ever get a chance to visit this incredible city, here’s a few things you might want to consider when you’re there…

LISBOA: FIRST IMPRESSIONS

After a long morning of work, we managed to wiggle in some Lisbon sight-seeing in the afternoon. What a spectacular city! It’s not what you might call downright beautiful, but it is what you would call unique, with architecture that could not be more hodge-podge, and little houses that look like they are all stacked on top of each other. Another thing I was obsessing over were the incredible doorways! Some tiny, some bright and colourful, some super old and rusty, all one-of-a-kind.

BIENVENUE

Salut mes amis!

I have successfully survived my first weekend in France and decided it was time to use this rainy Sunday morning to get my blog up and running. This blog has been in the back of my mind for a while and it feels good to finally be writing my first post!

As my mom and I drove up here from Madrid at the crack of dawn on Wednesday morning of the 11th of May, we discussed my future blog ideas and I decided there is no use talking about a blog, but rather just writing it!!

For the next three months I’ll be a design intern at a major apparel brand here on the southern coast of France… Given the fact I am interning and living in a foreign country, I decided to start a blog to document the musings of a wanderer – someone who never feels from any one place in particular, and who always has itchy feet for discovery and continuous learning.

Aside from travelling in France, I also have a trip to Lisbon to look forward to, in the coming month. And the fun doesn’t end there… During the month of August I’ll be experiencing a major change of scenery as I head off to Ethiopia to collaborate at an English summer camp in the rural market town of Zway. A truly unique experience I cannot wait to blog about and share.

My dad is already my first loyal follower, even though I haven’t posted a single thing yet! I figured I should at least have an intro post with more about my future wanderings (both physical and imaginary) to follow…
